Pro Spotlight: Bob Soven

Describe the girls who flock around you guys on Tour. Well, we have three categories of babes on the road: the wake fan, the closet wake fan and the know-nothing girl. The wake fans know everything about you, they have your poster on their walls and they have your sticker layout memorized. These are the girls who will end up in your hotel room that night still wearing the hat you signed earlier that day. Next, the closet wake fan: This awkward bunch starts off the conversation acting like the know-nothing girls, but deep down inside they are true wake fans. As the night goes on with these cliché gals, they slowly drop hints about their knowledge of the wake in an attempt to show off and possibly turn us on. In reality, they are turning us off. Onto the next one, the know-nothing girls. They know absolutely nothing about wakeboarding, but are still really excited to hang out. We all think these are the best of the bunch, but relationships with know-nothings never work. So, in the long run, they are all the same. I’m sorry if I offended any ladies in an attempt to make a joke. However, there are plenty of girls, but only one TransWorld WAKEBOARDING first issue!

How is the showdown with you and your brother Phil going? It’s been a battle. We have been very supportive, considering we really aren’t competing against each other. It’s more teaming up to take down that movie-watching, girlfriend-texting, non-partying Aussie who no one can understand. I love you, Phil!

Are there wakeboarders you would admit are better than you? It’s plausible, but highly improbable. No!

What advice do you have for all types of wakeboarders, based on what you’ve been through? Don’t use product in your hair. You’ll get put into an immediate stereotype, and it’ll run onto your hands when you’re wakeboarding and make them slippery. Cover all grounds. If you can winch, then winch, but do everything else too. Whatever you do, don’t get upset — even if you have the worst run of your life. This sport is too fun to get down about. Be cool. Don’t ever think you’re better than someone because you can do something better than them.

How does it feel to be the first rider to get a Pro Spotlight in TransWorld WAKEBOARDING? In the words of Shane Bonifay, “That shit is dope!” This whole TransWorld deal is huge for the industry. We have everything that legitimizes a true action sport, so the TransWorld stamp only adds to that.

What can we look forward to in the future of Bob? Feature roles in a lot of action films. A triple-up whip contest hosted by me, Parks, Shane and maybe Phil. You can also look forward to a lot of good times. I, hopefully, have at least another 10 solid years in this sport. I personally want to push wakeboarding to the biggest places it’s been. That’s the plan.
