It’s been a busy and productive few weeks for me. I came back from Panama City, Florida, two Sundays ago and was up early Monday morning to start shooting for the 2010 MasterCraft Rewind DVD. MasterCraft is taking a totally new approach to a product DVD that I think you’ll find refreshing and entertaining. It’s not going to be the standard riding section followed by product review. Anyway, look forward to that.
We spent Monday through Wednesday with Rusty Malinoski, Zane Schwenk, and the Bump Films crew getting different riding shots, interviews and general shenanigans. One of the days, they wanted us to ride like we were training for a tournament and technically we were since the Liuzhou, China, comp was only seven days out. I went out for about 10 minutes doing the tour stuff when Rusty got bored and told me it was time to start doing Moby Dick 5s. It wasn’t one of those, “Hey bud, you should try this …” talks. It was more of a “Seriously, why aren’t you doing a …” Honestly, it was pretty effective. I tried about five that day and went on to make my first one on Thursday morning when we kicked off the CWB shoot.
Most of the CWB team did the 2010 product shoot back in July, but I wasn’t able to make it because of an invite to compete in the World Games at the same time. This time around, Zane, Derek Grasman, Will Christen, Trevor Hansen, and I had three days to get the shots we wanted. It was a pretty great shoot. We stayed in Florida but ventured out to some places none of us had ever ridden, including an active limestone and sand mine. It was nice to ride a place so foreign yet so close to home.
We finished the CWB shoot on Saturday evening then on Sunday evening I headed out to Liuzhou, China. I really should have posted this blog from there, but I was way too busy being a tourist rather than a blogger. I’ll work on finding a better balance with that. Lihozu was an interesting and impressive place to see. Interesting, because it has a geography like nowhere else I’ve been. The city itself is basically flat, surrounded by countless standalone rock formations hundreds of feet high. My only regret is a lack of pictures due to a camera malfunction. I really need to start rolling with my back-up camera body. I guess when packing I decided that was 8 ounces more than I could possibly carry with me.
My plans for the non-tournament season are to ride a ton and start trying new stuff — both new for me as well as new to wakeboarding. This is the time of year I can go for new tricks without worrying about a tweak that could keep me out of the next weekend’s comp. I’m hoping to check some tricks off the list that have been there for too long. I’ll keep you posted.
