2nd Annual Byerly Toe Jam
First Day Results 4/21/2005
With great conditions at The Projects in Bithlo, Florida, 16 wakeskaters rode for a chance to qualify for Friday’s main event at the Second Annual Byerly Toe Jam.
All 16 got to compete in the Wake category, pulled by the Nautique 210 and the PWC category pulled by the Yamaha FX 140.
Last years’ qualifying rounds showcased breakthrough talent, especially by George Daniels, who qualified for the PWC main event and then went on to become one of the best wakeskaters in the sport. That was further validated by his World Championship last fall.
In the Wake category, the qualifiers were Chase Gregory, Kyle Walton, Clint Tompkins and Jordan Mears. For PWC it was Jona Boysen, Kyle Walton, Clint Tompkins and Steve Schoenhals.
Congrats to Walton and Tompkins who qualified for each category. Tompkins’ rail technique was solid, hitting the large Performance A-frame and his lip trick combos and wake-to-wake efforts were solid as well. On the day, Tompkins was a major standout. Unsponsored Kyle Walton was another standout with great wake-to-wake style, 360 shove-its, frontside big spins and he was the first rider to master the green kinked rail sponsored by WakeBoarding Magazine.
Overall, the event was a great warm up for tomorrow’s throw down consisting of pro Wake competition and a winch challenge out of a pool with two different down rails to hit. In the words of Aaron Reed, last years’ Best Trick Winch champion and Move of the Year recipient, “Some serious stuff’s gonna go down out there this weekend.
