Final MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour Stop of the Season Opens Competition in Michigan
Grand Rapids, MI. — The world’s top professional wakeboarders opened competition for the final time this season at day one of the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour in Grand Rapids. With season-ending rankings on the line, stakes were high with riders jockeying for bragging rights and valuable standings points at the first ever Pro Tour stop at Millennium Park.
Fresh off a World Championship victory, MasterCraft team rider Rusty Malinoski thrived behind the world class X-Star towboat. Launching from its massive wake, Malinoski put in one of the day’s best runs linking together powerful aerials including a indy roll to blind and backside 720 to win his heat. Pro Tour leader, Phil Soven performed with his usual dominating consistency, registering a well-balanced run that was equal parts style and precision. His ultra-clean run included on-point rail riding and huge airs.
Additional day one highlights included Michigan’s Mike Dowdy leveraging the home field advantage to his favor by putting on one of the day’s top performances. With his heat winning run, Dowdy secured a spot in tomorrow’s semifinals and looks to be the fan favorite to win his first ever Pro Tour event.
“The host site has gone all out to help us bring the Pro Tour here and we couldn’t be happier with the setup here at Millenium Park,” said Chris Bischoff, competition director. “Fans saw some amazing riding today and tomorrow should be even more exciting with the athletes hitting the water for the final time this season.”
Also on the water today, wakeboarding’s future stars riding in the Overton’s Junior Pro Series performed well beyond their years behind the X-Star. It was a great day for the division’s Aussie contingent with Tony Iacconi and Cory Teunissen achieving perfection with flawless runs that featured giant wake-to-wake airs, technical grabs and smooth rail riding that the judges rewarded with 100 point rides.
